It is always interesting to go back and read through some of the letters the Founding Fathers were sending when they were still roaming this planet. The snippet above comes from a letter Thomas Jefferson sent to William Stephens Smith, the son-in-law of John Adams, which includes Jefferson's famous quote, "The tree of liberty must be refreshed with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

While the one-sentence banger garners a lot of attention by individuals who like to quote Jefferson, I believe it is important to understand the context of the quote and the sentences that came right before it. This letter was written in 1787 and Thomas Jefferson was complaining that there had not been ENOUGH rebellions from the citizens at the time. "God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion." This man was under the impression that the entropy of a free republic could erode liberty within two decades if let alone without any active rejuvenation from the populace. Talk about eternal vigilance!

Reading this particular letter highlights just how far we've come from the principles this country was founded on. Fast forward 233 years and many have evolved into a docile, complacent and controlled mass of aimless people who would call the Founding Fathers terrorists if they were alive today. Even crazier, Jefferson was warning about "fake news" and the misconception of facts in the eyes of the masses. He was warning that these forces need to be actively confronted because a misinformed populace leads to lethargy, which leads to the death of public liberty.

I don't think there is a more prescient warning from this time period that I could share with you freaks today. Go give the full letter a read when you get a chance. And then read some more of Thomas Jefferson's letters. Then contemplate whether or not we have been heeding his warning in modern times.

Spoiler alert: we have turned into Jefferson's worst nightmare.
