Bitcoin, Not Crypto

Apr 23, 2025

Marty's Bent

We've been advertising this presentation that was given by Dhruv Bansal and Parker Lewis at the University of Austin a few weeks ago; Bitcoin, Not Crypto. Unfortunately I was not able to attend in person when it happened, but (being the good friend and fan of Dhruv and Parker that I am) I took some time to sit down and watch the presentation tonight. Despite knowing these two gentlemen for the better part of decade and having discussed a lot of topics with them on the TFTC podcast and off-the-record, there's nothing better than a presentation given by Parker or Dhruv when they're doing it individually. It's even better when they team up to give a joint presentation tackling one of the most confounding questions that inevitably pops into people's heads when they enter the world of bitcoin, "Why should I focus on bitcoin and not crypto?"

This is one of those presentation you send out to your network. The way in which the two systematically go through the process of explaining why the 21,000,000 supply limit is the break through innovation that Satoshi brought to market, why money ultimately converges to one, how bitcoin acts as a system of markets that align incentives that enables the distributed cash system, why those fixated on "blockchain tech" completely miss the forest for the trees, and how we can "build everything on bitcoin" is masterclass. A ~70 minutes distillation of the most important concepts to grasp when exploring bitcoin earnestly. If you're looking to create the fastest "zero to one" moment for the people in your life who you think should and need to understand bitcoin, send them this series of three short videos that encompass the whole presentation.

Many are woefully confused and misguided when it comes to the perceived competition that bitcoin is engaged in with other cryptocurrencies. In reality, it isn't a competition at all. Bitcoin exceeds every other network by orders of magnitude in the areas that count; network distribution, hashrate, market liquidity, and robustness of the foundation that the monetary system and economy of the future are being built on. I truly believe that you will save the people in your life countless hours and a material amount of money by making them watch this presentation.

It's a one-shot no-scope tier display of understanding of bitcoin, why it's important and how it will ultimately take over as the reserve currency of the world.

BPI's Work to Position the US as a Leader in the Bitcoin Era

Matt Pines, my recent guest at TFTC Studio, makes a compelling case that Bitcoin policy has graduated from fringe interest to serious national security concern. His work at the Bitcoin Policy Institute represents a growing recognition that the US must develop coherent strategies around Bitcoin as both a neutral reserve asset and a peer-to-peer settlement system. While skeptics focus on short-term noise like tariffs and trade wars, Pines and his colleagues are playing the long game - working methodically with lawmakers to establish frameworks that position America favorably in the coming Bitcoin-powered economic reality.

"Really proud of the work that BPI is doing... really excited to open up this partnership with Pubkey in DC, essentially a Bitcoin embassy... a cultural note downtown for Bitcoiners to congregate." - Matt Pines

The stakes couldn't be higher as we approach what Pines calls a "geoeconomic reordering." His organization's Bitcoin Policy Summit on June 25th represents a critical step toward ensuring American leadership in this space. By bringing together key stakeholders in DC, BPI is helping build consensus around important issues including human rights protection through censorship-resistant payments, defending developers of open-source software, and appropriate regulatory frameworks for mining. Their work ensures the US won't be left behind as Bitcoin continues its inevitable march toward mainstream adoption.

Bitcoin, Not Crypto is a three-part master class from Parker Lewis and Dhruv Bansal that cuts through the noise—covering why 21 million was the key technical simplification that made bitcoin possible, why blockchains don’t create decentralization, and why everything else will be built on bitcoin.
