Virgin Voyages has become the first cruise line to accept Bitcoin, introducing an "Annual Pass" program for unlimited luxury cruising.
Virgin Voyages, the cruise line created by Sir Richard Branson, has announced it will accept Bitcoin as payment for its cruises, marking a milestone in the travel industry’s adoption of Bitcoin. The company is also introducing its new “Annual Pass” program starting in 2025, which allows unlimited cruising for a year at an upfront cost of $120,000 plus taxes and fees.
This development positions Virgin Voyages as the first cruise line to embrace Bitcoin, furthering its appeal to younger, tech-savvy travelers. The Annual Pass provides access to premium accommodations, including a Sea Terrace cabin with a private balcony, internet access, laundry services, and a $100 bar tab per voyage.
Virgin Group founder Richard Branson expressed enthusiasm for the new program, stating:
"What started as a sought-after ‘work from sea’ concept with our Season Pass has evolved into something even more special. Now, Sailors can jump aboard any of our ships, across an endless variety of exciting destinations for an entire year."
While platforms like Travala have previously allowed Bitcoin payments for hotels and flights, Virgin Voyages sets a precedent as the first major cruise line to do so. The decision aligns with the company’s focus on millennial and Gen Z travelers, who are more likely to use Bitcoin for their ease and accessibility.
Virgin Voyages’ decision comes during a period of heightened interest in Bitcoin. Institutional players like BlackRock and Fidelity have backed Bitcoin ETFs, bolstering its credibility as a mainstream financial asset. On a national level, countries such as El Salvador and Poland are considering integrating Bitcoin into their financial strategies, while U.S. policymakers, including President-elect Donald Trump, have floated the idea of creating a Bitcoin reserve.
