Comedy Is Back Baby! Lets Go!
I have been on the 1990s - early 2000s "Rom-Com" kick lately. After Shogun ended, there was nothing to watch, so I started to revisit the classics. Runaway Bride (my favorite tbh, Richard Gere kills it) Chasing Amy, You've Got Mail, I have seen them all 100 times.
When I got to "Bring It On," one scene stood out to me as "Damn, this movie would have never been made today." Here it is.
I thought it was harmless, but I knew the director had to apologize. And guess what! He did.
Of course, it was 2020. Apologizing for a joke made TWENTY YEARS AGO IS INSANE.
I love comedy. I watched "The Chapelle Show" until the DVD broke (yes, Gen-Z DVDs were real). I still remember "Insomniac With Dave Attell" when he came to Philadelphia. I was way too young, but I tried to go find him.
That's why I am friends with the editor and chief of this here website. The first time I saw Barstool Sports, I thought Dave Portnoy was a way funnier, more authentic version of Bill Simmons, and I wanted in. Dave spoke the way my friends and I talked. I first met Dave at a random hotel lobby in Philadelphia. He made fun of me because I had a tie on and I was speaking a mile a minute (I had to sneak out of work to go meet him), and I made fun of Gaz because he was eating a Caesar salad like it was his last meal on Earth. That's what's funny to most men. Everyone you meet is like being in a High School sports locker room. Poking fun at people is not mean; it's a term of endearment or admiration.
We had a rough few years for Comedy. The "Woke Culture" was winning. There were people at BARSTOOL SPORTS trying to get Dave to apologize for a joke he made when none of those people would have made a dollar if Dave had not been the way he was. That's a fact.
Everyone was trying to "cancel" everyone for anything they said. Joe Rogan went as far as to ensure you do not have any phones (great decision, by the way) in his Comedy club in Austin. It was getting bizarre because whatever they were trying to push on us was not Comedy.
We started to turn the corner away from the Woke (4-10?) years we had when they released American Fiction. That shit was so funny, and it was making fun of everything that was happening in Hollywood. But when I saw it in theatres (Austin, pretty liberal, I guess?), no one laughed except me. I sulked out of the theatre because I kept thinking, "How does anyone not see how absurd this is?"
Well, guess what, boys and girls. WE ARE MOTHERFUCKING BACK. IT'S OVER. TOM BRADY, WHO KILLED EVERY FOOTBALL TEAM (besides the Eagles), JUST KILLED WOKE CULTURE IN ONE NIGHT. ON NETFLIX, NO LESS! THE COMPANY THAT TRIED TO CANCEL DAVE CHAPPELLE.
I mean, look at these jokes.
This is an essential moment because EVERYONE in that room has something to lose. Tom Brady is trying to buy the Las Vegas Raiders, and he got made fun of for 2 hours about his ex-wife fucking someone else, and they did it LIVE! NO ONE would have done this in 2021.
Time Stamp this moment because we can be funny again in America. Two million people watched it live, and there will be many more roasts. This is a big moment to bring normalcy back to this crazy country because it is three days later, and no one hates it. Everyone LOVED it. Well, besides Jason Kelce, we all knew he was not going to like it.....iykyk
