Mastercard Launches Bitcoin Debit Card Linked to Non-Custodial Wallets in Europe

Mastercard has launched a new euro-denominated debit card that allows users to spend Bitcoin directly from non-custodial wallets at over 100 million merchants globally. The card, developed in partnership with crypto payments provider Mercuryo, eliminates the need for centralized exchanges by enabling users to maintain full ownership of their assets.

Christian Rau, Senior Vice President of Mastercard’s crypto unit, emphasized the goal of enhancing the self-custody experience, saying, “We’re eliminating the traditional barriers between blockchain and conventional payments, providing consumers who want to spend their digital assets with an easy, reliable, and secure way to do so.”

The new card integrates with self-custodial wallets, where users hold full responsibility for securing their funds, and supports spending without transferring assets to intermediaries. Fees for the Mastercard-branded Spend card include a €1.60 issuance fee, a €1 monthly maintenance fee, and a 0.95% transaction fee.
