Protests Erupt Across Canada in Opposition to Federal Carbon Tax Increase

On April 1, a wave of protests swept across various regions of Canada as citizens voiced their discontent with the latest federal carbon tax hike, blaming the policy for exacerbating the financial burdens of those already facing economic hardship. The carbon levy, which rose from $65 per tonne of greenhouse gas emissions to $80, is on a trajectory to reach $170 per tonne by the year 2030.

Rita Abouarrage, a protestor at Parliament Hill in Ottawa, expressed the personal impact of the rising costs: “I can’t afford $2,000 for an apartment, and then trying to eat, pay for your vehicle, and heat and electricity, it’s too much,” she stated. Abouarrage highlighted the additional frustration with government officials by noting, “politicians are giving themselves raises and we’re getting poorer and poorer.”

The increase in the carbon tax coincided with a 4.4 percent salary raise for Members of Parliament, resulting in an additional $8,500 to their annual earnings, pushing their pay above the $200,000 mark.

Demonstrators, following a lineup of speeches, proceeded to march toward the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge, which connects Ottawa and Gatineau, as a sign of protest. The Ottawa Police used social media to inform the public that downtown demonstrations "may result in traffic and transit delays or disruptions."

The federal Liberal government defends the carbon tax, stating that eight out of 10 Canadians receive a net benefit from the tax via quarterly carbon rebate payments. However, the Conservative opposition, referencing the Parliamentary Budget Officer's figures, argues that the tax leaves eight out of 10 Canadians financially worse off, especially amid the current cost-of-living crisis. The Conservatives have demanded the repeal of the carbon tax.
